The Access Virus C synthesizer stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Access Music in the world of synthesizers. With its unmistakable finish and robust feature set, the Virus C has cemented its place as a cherished classic in electronic music production. Originally released to the market back in 2002, I've been able to put my hands on it right now, almost 20 years later! In this review, I'll delve into its sound quality, build and design, user interface, features, connectivity, and any potential drawbacks.

SOUND QUALITY

One of the standout features of the Virus C is its exceptional sound quality. Its virtual analog synthesis engine produces tones that are not just rich and warm, but astonishingly versatile, still today. Whether you're crafting lush, evolving pads, or crafting cutting-edge leads with razor-sharp precision, the Virus C excels in delivering a wide array of sounds. The synthesizer's ability to create complex, evolving textures is nothing short of remarkable. It captures the essence of analog warmth, which has endeared it to musicians across various genres.

BUILD AND DESIGN

From a physical standpoint, the Virus C is a sturdy, well-built instrument. Its robust construction ensures its durability, making it well-suited for both the rigors of the studio and the demands of live performances. Mine recent second hand unit was in particularly bad conditions aesthetically. But only the wooden sides really suffered the challenge of time, being scratched and slightly decolored. Something easy to fix thought: after a deep cleaning of the unit both internally and externally, and a quick repaint job on the wooden sides, my Virus C looked hardly as old as it really is. 

The iconic finish, coupled with the big "VIRUS" text, makes it an eye-catching centerpiece in any setup. The keyboard action is responsive and comfortable, allowing for expressive and dynamic playing experiences.

USER INTERFACE

While the Virus C's user interface can appear daunting to newcomers, it offers immense power and flexibility to those who invest the time to learn it. The matrix-style modulation system, while initially intimidating, becomes a playground for sound shaping and creative experimentation once you've familiarized yourself with it. The LCD display, though functional, could have been more user-friendly. However, the array of knobs (all of them still working flawlessly) and buttons provide direct access to essential parameters, making real-time sound manipulation a breeze.

FEATURES

The Virus C is packed with features that cater to the needs of seasoned synthesists and sound explorers. Multiple oscillators, filters, and effects open the door to a vast sound palette. The extensive modulation matrix empowers you to sculpt sounds with precision and explore new sonic territories.
