Prioritizing Privacy, Apple Integrates ChatGPT into iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 and Negotiates with Google for Gemini AI
Apple has declined a potential AI partnership with Meta due to significant privacy concerns, according to Bloomberg. The companies had initial discussions in March about integrating Meta's large language model (LLM), Llama, into iOS 18. However, these talks did not progress further.
APPLE’S AI STRATEGY: PRIVACY FIRST. Apple has always been a staunch advocate for user privacy, a stance that played a pivotal role in its decision to sidestep a partnership with Meta. Instead, Apple has chosen to collaborate with OpenAI, planning to integrate ChatGPT into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. This integration will allow Siri to defer some requests to the more advanced ChatGPT model, enhancing its capabilities significantly.
Moreover, Apple is in negotiations with Google to incorporate its Gemini AI model. The tech giant is also in talks with AI company Anthropic, underscoring its strategy to provide users with a variety of AI model choices while upholding stringent privacy standards.
WWDC HIGHLIGHTS: DIVERSE AI OPTIONS. At the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Craig Federighi, Apple's software engineering chief, emphasized that Apple aims to offer users a selection of AI models from multiple providers.
Federighi stated that Apple plans to establish deals with several AI providers, ensuring users have diverse options while adhering to strict privacy protocols. This approach ensures that Apple remains at the forefront of technological innovation without compromising its core values.
LAUNCHING APPLE INTELLIGENCE. Apple Intelligence, a new feature set to launch later this year, exemplifies Apple’s forward-thinking AI strategy. Initially available in US English, the feature will be supported by the iPhone 15 Pro, along with iPad and Mac models equipped with the M1 chip or later. The company plans to gradually extend support to additional languages and regions, enhancing accessibility and functionality for a broader user base.
