Apple has unveiled its latest iOS 17.4 update, catering to the needs of iPhone and iPad users worldwide. Packed with new features, bug fixes, and EU-specific enhancements, this update promises to elevate the user experience while ensuring compliance with the EU's Digital Markets Act.

The highlight of the iOS 17.4 update includes an array of fresh emoji additions to the keyboard. Users can now express themselves more creatively with new additions like mushroom, phoenix, lime, broken chain, and shaking heads emoji. Additionally, 18 people and body emoji now offer the flexibility to face them in either direction, adding versatility to communication.

For podcast enthusiasts, Apple introduces an innovative feature with Podcasts Transcriptions. This feature allows users to follow episodes through synchronized text, enhancing accessibility and comprehension. Available in English, Spanish, French, and German, users can read episode transcripts, search for specific content, and utilize accessibility features like Text Size and VoiceOver for an enriched listening experience.

Furthermore, the iOS 17.4 update addresses various issues and introduces several enhancements, including:

  • Music Recognition: Identify and add songs to Apple Music playlists and library, including Apple Music Classical.
  • Siri Messaging Announcements: Siri now announces received messages in any supported language, enhancing hands-free communication.
  • Stolen Device Protection: Enhanced security options for safeguarding devices in all locations.
  • Battery Health Insights: Detailed battery cycle count, manufacturing date, and first-use information for iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models.
  • Improved Call Identification: Display of Apple-verified business names, logos, and department names for enhanced caller identification.
  • Business Updates in Messages: Receive trusted information on order status, flight notifications, and fraud alerts within Messages for Business.
  • Apple Cash Virtual Card Numbers: Seamlessly pay with Apple Cash at merchants without Apple Pay support using virtual card numbers from Wallet or Safari AutoFill.

In addition to these enhancements, the iOS 17.4 update introduces EU-specific changes to ensure compliance with the Digital Markets Act. Residents of the European Union now have expanded options, including:

  • Installing apps from alternative app marketplaces.
  • Choosing a default web browser during initial setup.
  • Utilizing alternative payment options for App Store purchases.
  • Managing default web browsers directly from Safari.

These changes empower users with more flexibility and control over their digital experience while promoting fair competition in the market. Some options may require developer support to fully utilize.

To update to iOS 17.4, users can navigate to Settings > General > Software Update on their iPhone or iPad. Compatibility includes iPhone XS/XS and newer models, as well as supported iPad devices such as iPad mini 5 and newer, iPad 6th generation and newer, iPad Air 4 and newer, and various models of iPad Pro.
