John Romero's Gift to Fans is A Hellish Sequel to Gaming History
Three decades ago, on this day in 1993, id Software unleashed the iconic first-person shooter game Doom upon the world. A groundbreaking release that revolutionized the gaming industry, Doom carved its place in history as a pioneer of the FPS genre. In celebration of Doom's 30th anniversary, John Romero, co-creator of the original game, has gifted fans with a thrilling surprise – the release of Sigil 2. This nine-level episode serves as both a tribute to the game's legacy and a sequel to Romero's 2019 creation, Sigil.
Sigil 2 thrusts players into a nightmarish realm, a grotesque domain of relentless torment, unending demon hordes, and a barrage of heavy metal mayhem. The narrative takes an unexpected turn, straying from the victorious journey back to Earth, plunging players into Baphomet's cunning snare.
Notably, all but one of the new levels in Sigil 2 includes a deathmatch arena for multiplayer, adding a competitive edge to the nostalgic experience. The episode also introduces fresh art and a new MIDI soundtrack crafted by James Paddock.
For enthusiasts of the original Doom, the good news is that Sigil 2, a mere 2MB download, is available for free on Romero.com. This release is a testament to the enduring legacy of a game that shaped the gaming landscape. I'm old enough to have seen the original Doom on Amiga back in the days, and I'm proud to have witnessed the birth of this piece of gaming history.
To mark the occasion, John Romero will engage in an online chat on Twitch later today at 3 pm Eastern time. Joining him in this celebration of gaming history will be John Carmack, the visionary behind the Doom engine technology and a legend in game development.
Happy 30th anniversary, Doom!
