In the vibrant world of 1980s music production, few drum machines have achieved the iconic status of the Oberheim DMX. Today, thanks to GForce Software, the legendary Oberheim DMX is making a comeback, not as hardware but as a virtual plugin, ensuring that its classic sounds continue to inspire contemporary music producers.

The Return of a Classic

GForce Software's new Oberheim DMX plugin is a meticulously crafted digital recreation of the original drum machine, created in close collaboration with the original developer. It's designed to work on both macOS and Windows, offering compatibility with popular digital audio workstations (DAWs) through VST, VST3, AU, and AAX formats. This revival allows users to access the same iconic drum sounds that defined the 80s, but with modern enhancements and workflow improvements.

Authentic Sounds with Modern Flexibility

The Oberheim DMX plugin faithfully reproduces the sample-based sounds that made the original drum machine so revered. It includes all the classic sounds from both the 1981 and 1983 versions of the DMX, as well as the 1982 DX sound kits. Users can explore a total of 288 unique DMX and DX sounds, organized into over 60 ready-to-use preset kits. These kits range from classic to modern, and even some hybrid variations, giving users plenty of flexibility to craft their ideal drum patterns.

No Built-In Sequencer

One notable aspect of the new plugin is the absence of a built-in sequencer. Unlike traditional drum machines, users must program their patterns directly within their DAW, rather than in the plugin itself.

This may be a downside for those accustomed to standalone drum machines, but it aligns with contemporary DAW-based workflows, allowing for more complex and customized arrangements, a choice that I personally like and prefer.

Comprehensive Controls and Effects

The Oberheim DMX plugin offers a variety of controls for each track, including solo, mute, delay sends, reverb sends, pitch, decay, pan, and gain. Additionally, it provides a multi-mode SEM-based filter, distortion, and a compressor on the master output. Users can also take advantage of the 85 included MIDI files, containing many classic pattern recreations, to kickstart their productions.

A Scalable and User-Friendly Interface

The plugin features a fully scalable user interface, making it easy to navigate and use on a variety of screen sizes. The preset browser is intuitive and designed for quick access to sounds, ensuring a smooth workflow for users at all skill levels.

Pricing and Availability

GForce Software's Oberheim DMX plugin is available now at an introductory price of £19.99 (plus VAT), discounted from its regular price of £39.99. With its wide range of supported formats, users can seamlessly integrate it into their existing production setups.

This reimagining of a classic drum machine provides a unique opportunity for producers to add timeless sounds to their music projects.
