Huawei has initiated a closed beta testing program for HarmonyOS 4.2, inviting owners of the Huawei Watch 4 and Watch 4 Pro to participate in China. This beta phase promises to introduce a range of new features, particularly in health tracking and device connectivity, and will set the stage for a wider rollout later in the year.

Beta Testing Program Details

Huawei's closed beta program is accepting applications from users of the Huawei Watch 4 series.

The company has set a limit of 6,000 participants, with selection being made on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications will be accepted until May 6, 2024, with the first beta version expected to roll out around April 25. After the closed beta phase, Huawei plans to open a public beta, allowing a broader group of users to test HarmonyOS 4.2.

New Features in HarmonyOS 4.2

Among the features announced for the HarmonyOS 4.2 update are:

  • Health Glance Version 2.0: an upgraded health monitoring system that now tracks 13 different biometrics, including arrhythmia analysis, sleep apnea detection, and hyperglycemia risk assessment.
  • Ultra Wide Band (UWB) Car Key: exclusive to the Huawei Watch 4 Pro, this feature enables users to unlock their car without a traditional key, enhancing the wearable's convenience.
  • New Watch Faces: HarmonyOS 4.2 brings additional customization options for watch faces, allowing users to personalize their smartwatch experience.

These features were first seen on the Huawei Watch 4 Pro Space Exploration edition, which was recently launched in China, giving users a glimpse into the potential of the new operating system.

How to Join the Closed Beta

Users interested in participating in the closed beta should ensure their Watch 4 model is running on version 4.0.0.219 or later. To register, users need to have the latest version of the Huawei Health app. Once in the app, select 'Device', then 'Connected Devices', and follow the on-screen instructions to submit the application. Huawei will confirm the selection of successful applicants for the closed beta program.

What's Next for HarmonyOS 4.2?

After the closed beta phase, Huawei plans to open a public beta with no cap on the number of participants. This wider testing phase will give more users the opportunity to explore and provide feedback on HarmonyOS 4.2 before its public release. The timeline for a general rollout has not yet been announced, but it is expected later in the year.
