Enhanced Hardware Compatibility and Cutting-Edge Features Unveiled in the Latest Release
Linux Mint maintains its prominence as the second most popular distribution choice on Distrowatch.
Linux Mint 21.3 Gets an Edge
The Linux Mint 21.3 release, now adorned with the subtitle "Virginia", has garnered attention not only for its reliability but also for its ability to adapt to the demands of modern hardware. The default Linux kernel 5.15 LTS, while steadfast, may pose limitations for users with cutting-edge devices. To address this, the Linux Mint development team presents the "Edge" ISO file for the Cinnamon edition, featuring the latest Linux kernel 6.5.
Catering to New Hardware Challenges
The Edge version, designed for users with hardware that may struggle with the default 5.15 LTS kernel, brings Linux Mint 21.3 up-to-date with kernel 6.5. The developers emphasize this move by stating:
"This image is made for people whose hardware is too new to boot the 5.15 LTS kernel included in Linux Mint 21.x. It ships with kernel 6.5 instead."
Navigating Compatibility Hurdles
The Edge ISO, initially planned to incorporate the 6.2 Linux kernel from Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS, underwent a revision due to compatibility concerns. Issues with Acer laptops, AMD graphics cards, WLAN adapters, and SSDs prompted the Mint development team to opt for the more contemporary 6.5 kernel. This decision ensures that users can seamlessly experience the latest features without compromising compatibility.
While the Edge version currently features the Cinnamon desktop, which is developed in-house by the Linux Mint team, users can easily explore alternative desktop environments such as XFCE or Mate through the intuitive package management system.
Availability of Edge ISO
The much-anticipated Edge ISO of Linux Mint 21.3 Cinnamon Edition is now available for download from the official Linux Mint website. This release expands the horizons of Linux Mint, offering users a solution for newer hardware challenges and reaffirming its commitment to providing a user-friendly and adaptable Linux experience.
