In a strategic move to deepen its influence in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence, Microsoft has appointed Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, former co-founders of OpenAI, to spearhead a groundbreaking AI research team. This announcement follows a series of intense discussions triggered by Altman's unexpected dismissal from OpenAI's board. Just a few hours ago Altman said to be ready to follow new ways for his career and, while - in the meantime - OpenAI seems ready to fall apart with the whole crew asking the board to resign, he's ready to continue his adventure in artificial intelligence with the giant of Redmond. 

Microsoft's CEO, Satya Nadella, revealed that Altman would take the helm as the Chief Executive of the new AI group, expressing confidence in their ability to foster independent identities, a strategy that has proven successful with entities like GitHub, Mojang Studios, and LinkedIn within the Microsoft umbrella.

"The mission continues"

The duo, Altman and Brockman, will be joined by top talent from OpenAI, including Szymon Sidor, Jakub Pachocki, Aleksander Madry, with additional hires expected to follow. Nadella emphasized the commitment to provide the necessary resources for the success of this new venture. Despite Microsoft's $10 billion investment and nearly 50% ownership in OpenAI, the sudden decision by OpenAI's board to dismiss Altman took the tech community by surprise. Nadella's swift action in securing a new home for the ex-leaders before the market opening on Monday is being hailed as a move of "incredible execution" and, actually it is (considering the rivalry between tech giants to be the first in the AI race). 

Altman, the public face of OpenAI and a key figure in the global AI race, is recognized not only for leading OpenAI but also for influencing countless startups building on its software offerings. Microsoft's strategic acquisition of Altman and Brockman strengthens its competitive edge, safeguarding their expertise from potential poaching by other tech giants. 

"The mission continues", declared Altman following his integration into Microsoft, reinforcing the commitment to advancing AI technology.

The tumultuous weekend, marked by an unsuccessful attempt to bring Altman back to OpenAI, concluded with the appointment of former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear as interim chief executive. Nadella reaffirmed Microsoft's commitment to its partnership with OpenAI but acknowledged the need for understanding and collaboration with the new leadership team. OpenAI's decision to remove Altman from the board without clear explanation sparked controversy among its employees. Analysts labeled the move an "earthquake," emphasizing the impact on OpenAI's tech, considered the core of Microsoft's Copilot and enterprise strategy.

Emmett Shear acknowledged the mishandling of Altman's removal and pledged to initiate a thorough review, engage stakeholders, and restructure the management team to rebuild trust within the organization. Despite the uncertainties, Shear expressed respect for OpenAI's achievements and a commitment to protect and further grow the company.

As Microsoft forges ahead with its new AI group, the tech industry watches closely, anticipating the potential innovations that could emerge from this powerhouse collaboration.
