Netflix Opts Out of Creating App for Apple's Vision Pro Mixed Reality Headset, Sparking Speculation and Industry Debate
Streaming giant Netflix has decided to forego creating an app for the much-anticipated Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset. With pre-orders for the $3,499 device set to begin this Friday, Bloomberg reports that not only has Netflix declined to develop a dedicated app for the Vision Pro, but it will also restrict its iPad app from functioning on the innovative headset. The move has left industry insiders and consumers questioning the motives behind Netflix's conspicuous absence.
A Netflix spokesperson addressed the decision, stating:
"Our members will be able to enjoy Netflix on the web browser on the Vision Pro, similar to how our members can enjoy Netflix on Macs."
However, the lack of a dedicated app for such a cutting-edge device raises eyebrows, especially considering the immersive potential offered by the Apple Vision Pro.
While Netflix has not officially stated the reasons behind this decision, speculation abounds that the streaming giant may be hesitant to offer an app due to competition with Apple's own streaming service, Apple TV+. This move by Netflix comes at a time when Apple is actively promoting the Vision Pro as a revolutionary entertainment content product, particularly highlighting its use with the Apple TV app in what the company refers to as the "Cinema Environment".
In a notable contrast to Netflix's stance, Disney+ has gone a step further, offering exclusive content for Vision Pro users. Apple states that Disney+ subscribers can immerse themselves in four iconic environments with vivid details, enhancing the overall viewing experience on the headset.
As the February 2 launch date approaches, the Apple Vision Pro promises an extensive library of over 150 movies in 3D, available for purchase, rent, or streaming. The headset's capabilities, combined with support from major streaming services, position it as a significant player in the evolving landscape of entertainment technology.
The Netflix snub may be a pivotal moment in the ongoing "Streaming Wars", prompting discussions about the dynamics between tech giants and content providers. As the Apple Vision Pro release date come closer, the industry watches closely to see if other streaming platforms will follow in Netflix's footsteps or align with the innovative mixed reality experience.
