Enhanced Features Include Offline Email Viewing and Improved Encryption
Proton, the Swiss-based email service provider renowned for its commitment to privacy, has launched a desktop version of its Proton Mail app. This latest development not only offers users full access to both Proton Mail and Proton Calendar but also promises the much-anticipated ability to view emails offline. The desktop application, currently available in beta, is optimized for both Windows and macOS, maintaining the high standard of end-to-end encryption that Proton is known for.
While the possibility of accessing Proton emails offline has existed through desktop email apps in the past, it required configuring accounts with the Proton Mail Bridge to work with various IMAP/SMTP email clients such as Microsoft Outlook and Apple Mail. The newly introduced Proton desktop app eliminates this need, providing users with a more convenient and streamlined experience. The application will cache a substantial number of emails for offline use, offering flexibility for users on the go or in situations where internet access is limited.
It is crucial to note that internet access is still required for sending and encrypting emails on Proton. However, the offline feature enables users to view and draft emails during periods of travel, power outages, or other scenarios where internet connectivity is unavailable.
Proton is not stopping at the introduction of the desktop app; it is also rolling out encrypted auto-forwarding to paid users. This feature, available on both desktop and browser versions, ensures that forwarded emails are encrypted, particularly when sent to other Proton users. Additionally, Proton has announced improvements to its Calendar, introducing a fully searchable web version for enhanced usability.
For eager users anticipating immediate access to the desktop app, Proton is initially limiting availability to its paid "Visionary" tier for legacy users. Subscriptions to this tier are open until January 3rd, 2024. The company's plan is to extend access to the desktop app to all users in early 2024, marking a significant step towards making Proton's enhanced features available to a broader audience.
