New Synths, Effects, and Workflow Improvements for the Renowned Music Production Software
Superbooth, known for being a premier event for music hardware, has always had its share of exciting software announcements. This year, Reason Studios, formerly known as Propellerhead Software, brings a major update to its modular digital audio workstation (DAW) and rack plugin with the unveiling of Reason 13. After a three-year gap since the release of Reason 12 in 2021, this upgrade brings new synths, effects, workflow improvements, and much more.
Revamped Browser and Sequencer
Reason 13 introduces an all-new browser that consolidates patches, samples, and loops into one convenient location. The new browser features deep filtering capabilities, allowing users to search by categories and tags. This revamped structure aims to improve user experience by providing quicker access to the content needed for music production.
Moreover, the interface has undergone a significant redesign. The updated sequencer now includes an "edit area", facilitating detailed work on compositions. Other enhancements include improved zooming, layout changes, and easier access to editing features. These updates aim to address some of the workflow concerns that users have had with previous versions of Reason.
New Synth and Effects: Polytone and Ripley Space Delay
Reason 13 brings new instruments to the table. Polytone, a two-layer analog-modeling synthesizer, draws inspiration from classic hardware synths. Each layer comprises two oscillators, a multimode filter with drive, LFOs, and other modulation options. The standout feature of Polytone is the ability to stack and morph between layers, allowing for expansive sound design possibilities.
Complementing the new synth is Ripley Space Delay, a multi-effect processor that merges delay and reverb with unique elements like filtering, noise, and distortion. The addition of two LFOs and an envelope follower adds versatility to the effect, allowing users to explore a wide range of sonic textures.
Workflow Tools and Rack Plugin Compatibility
In addition to the significant updates, Reason 13 introduces new workflow tools to streamline music production. A new sidechain device for signal ducking, a gain tool, and a stereo tool are part of the package. These tools enhance the modularity of the Reason Rack, allowing users to manage their sound design processes more effectively.
Reason 13 can also be used as a rack plugin in other DAWs, making it an attractive option for producers who want to integrate its features into their existing workflows.
Release Date and Beta Testing
Reason 13 is set to be officially released on June 18, 2024, at the same price as previous versions. Users who purchased or upgraded to Reason 12 in 2024 qualify for a free upgrade. Additionally, Reason+ subscribers will receive a free upgrade with their active subscription plan.
