The tech community eagerly anticipates the release of Samsung's latest addition to its Galaxy Watch lineup, the Galaxy Watch 7. However, recent leaks suggest that the smartwatch won't be accompanied by an upgrade to its Exynos chip, sparking discussions about Samsung's strategy in the rapidly evolving wearable technology space.
Samsung has long been at the forefront of smartwatch innovation, particularly with its in-house Exynos processors. In the past, these chips have outshone competitors, notably Qualcomm's offerings. However, recent developments indicate a shift in the dynamics of the smartwatch processor landscape.
The Galaxy Watch 4 series in 2021 showcased the Exynos W920, a commendable chip for its time. Subsequent to that, the Galaxy Watch 6 in 2023 introduced the slightly enhanced Exynos W940. As the tech world eagerly awaited updates to Samsung's chip technology, Roland Quandt of WinFuture delivers news that the Galaxy Watch 7 will maintain the status quo, utilizing the same Exynos W940 chip.
This decision doesn't come as a major surprise, considering Samsung's established tick-tock cycle for its smartwatches. However, it raises questions about the company's competitive edge, especially as Qualcomm makes strides in improving its wearable offerings. Despite the lack of a significant chip upgrade, the Exynos W940 is recognized as a robust performer. Enthusiasts are now left to ponder whether Samsung has other substantial changes in store for the Galaxy Watch 7 series, which is expected to make its debut later this year.
Roland Quandt's leaks also hint at the existence of two other Exynos chips – the "5400" and the Exynos 6375. The purpose of these chips remains uncertain at this point, though.
