Spotify's foray into automotive hardware is coming to an end. As of December 9th, 2024, the Spotify Car Thing will no longer be supported. Initially, the company did not provide any information regarding refunds for the now-obsolete device. However, facing a class action lawsuit with the potential for additional legal challenges, Spotify has begun offering refunds to affected customers.

Refund Process and Customer Experiences

To receive a refund, Spotify Car Thing owners must contact Spotify customer service directly. Reports from users indicate mixed experiences: some have successfully received refunds, while others have had their requests denied. It's crucial for customers to provide proof of purchase to be eligible for a refund, which might explain the rejections some users have faced.

The Car Thing was originally priced at $90, but it was frequently discounted, sometimes selling for as low as $30. Spotify's refund policy stipulates that customers will be reimbursed the amount they paid, contingent on providing proof of purchase.

Customer Reactions

Despite the refund offer, many users are not satisfied. They have expressed a desire for Spotify to maintain support for the device, which enhanced the music streaming experience in older cars lacking modern infotainment systems. The Car Thing's discontinuation has left a void for those who valued its convenience and functionality.

Spotify's decision to discontinue the Car Thing has sparked significant backlash from its user base. While the company’s refund offer addresses some concerns, it doesn't appease all users. The situation underscores the challenges companies face when discontinuing hardware products, particularly in ensuring customer satisfaction and managing potential legal repercussions.
