Valve has officially terminated support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 on its Steam platform as of January 1, 2024. This decision marks a crucial shift in the gaming industry, urging users to upgrade their operating systems to either Windows 10 or the latest Windows 11 in order to continue enjoying seamless access to Steam updates, including vital security patches.

While users on pre-Windows 10 versions can still access their games on Steam, Valve issues a cautionary note. The service may encounter disruptions at any time, given its reliance on an embedded version of Google Chrome. It's important to note that Google ceased support for Windows 7 in January 2023, making Chrome 109 the final version available on older Windows operating systems.

Furthermore, Steam for Windows is expected to demand specific OS features and security components that are absent in Windows 7, 8, and 8.1. Valve, unable to assure the ongoing functionality of its gaming platform on these outdated systems, warns users that the service may cease to operate unexpectedly. Additionally, technical support for users on these legacy Windows versions has been discontinued.

The gravity of the situation is emphasized by the inherent risks associated with using outdated operating systems connected to the internet. Without regular security updates, users become vulnerable to malware and cyberattacks that exploit unpatched vulnerabilities in abandoned operating systems and associated software.

Compounding the challenge for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 users is the unavailability of a free upgrade path to Windows 10. In September 2023, Microsoft closed the longstanding loophole that permitted users to upgrade their old Windows versions to Windows 10 without purchasing a new license key. Consequently, a genuine Windows 10 or 11 license is now a prerequisite for installing a supported Windows version.
