Exploring the Features and Innovations of Suzuki's Reimagined Electric Instrument
In a nostalgic nod to the past, Suzuki Music has resurrected the iconic Omnichord, a peculiar electric instrument that first made waves in 1981. The company recently unveiled the updated version, named the OM-108, at the NAMM 2024 event, capturing the attention of music enthusiasts and industry professionals alike.
A Sonic Journey Through Time
Originally introduced in the '80s, the Omnichord was a synth with a unique twist – it could be strummed like a guitar.
OM-108: The Resurrected Marvel
The OM-108 boasts significant enhancements while preserving the essence of its predecessor. With 108 chords accessible by pressing one to three buttons, including major, minor augmented, diminished, sus4, and add9 shapes, the player can explore a broad spectrum of musical possibilities. The touch-sensitive strumplate allows users to create harp-like arpeggios across four octaves, adding a unique dimension to their compositions.
Equipped with 10 strumplate voicings, including vintage selections from the 1984 OM84 model, the instrument offers versatility with electric piano, guitar, and harp tones. Users can combine tones and rhythms for added creativity, thanks to the inclusion of second tones or sub voices. The OM-108 also features 10 rhythm patterns, assignable drum pads, and auto bass accompaniment, catering to a wide range of musical genres.
Power and Connectivity
Designed for portability, the OM-108 can be powered by AA batteries or an AC adapter, ensuring that musicians can create music anywhere.
From Announcement to Reality
While Suzuki had initially announced the Omnichord's revival in February of the previous year to celebrate the company's 70th birthday, the launch remained under wraps until the surprise unveiling at NAMM 2024 in Las Vegas. Suzuki Europe emphasizes that the OM-108 is not just for seasoned musicians but is accessible to anyone, irrespective of their skill level, providing a unique and innovative musical experience.
Availability and Pricing
Suzuki has confirmed that the OM-108 will be priced at around $750, with shipping from Japan set to commence in June, and stock availability expected in the following month. For a sneak peek into what the new Omnichord has to offer, Suzuki has curated a YouTube feature playlist.
The resurrection of the Omnichord with the OM-108 marks a continuation of Suzuki Music's commitment to innovation and a celebration of the instrument's enduring legacy. As musicians eagerly await its release, the OM-108 promises to carve out a distinct place in the contemporary music landscape.
