Teenage Engineering, the renowned Swedish tech and design firm celebrated for shaping the aesthetics of innovative devices, has once again stepped into the realm of music with the launch of its latest creation—the EP-133 KO II synthesizer, affectionately known as the KO II.

In a departure from its usual extravagance, Teenage Engineering introduces the KO II as a more accessible option, striking a balance between the wildly popular Pocket Operators and the iconic yet pricey OP-1 synthesizer. Priced at $299 (yes, you read right!), the KO II targets enthusiasts seeking a powerful, portable, and aesthetically pleasing music-making device.

The genesis of the KO II wasn't a meticulously planned venture, as co-founder David Eriksson reveals. Born out of necessity during the chip crisis, the team embarked on an experiment, navigating supply chain constraints by securing a year's worth of available parts before finalizing the design. Setting up a new production line in Barcelona ensured control over the entire manufacturing process.

The KO II emerges as a sleek gadget, adorned with buttons, knobs, and connectors, featuring a distinctive accountant-style calculator key feel. Eriksson emphasizes the deliberate limitation of 64MB of memory, encouraging users to create and finish songs rather than endlessly storing unfinished projects. This approach aligns with Teenage Engineering's philosophy of simplifying the music-making process.

Equipped with 999 slots for diverse samples, an internal microphone for personal recordings, and a wide array of pre-loaded sounds, the KO II caters to both seasoned musicians and newcomers. Its versatility extends to connectivity options, supporting USB-C, four AAA batteries for on-the-go use, MIDI devices, computer integration, and compatibility with any device featuring a 3.5mm jack.

Eriksson envisions the KO II as a tool capable of producing entire songs, with thoughtful design elements like orange buttons and knobs facilitating ease of use during live performances. Notably, Teenage Engineering consciously crafted a user-friendly manual, targeting those unfamiliar with synthesizers, signaling a shift towards inclusivity and accessibility.
