Cybersecurity researchers at Bitdefender Labs have unraveled a sophisticated scam targeting unsuspecting users who seek to earn money through an unconventional method—liking random YouTube videos. This deceptive ploy, initiated with a message from an unknown number often bearing an African country code, promises payment for the simple act of liking videos on the popular video-sharing platform.

Bitdefender researchers delved into this scam, participating in its intricate web for investigative purposes. They discovered that threat actors go beyond soliciting mere likes, extracting personal information such as WhatsApp phone numbers, age, occupation, full names, and even bank account details from their victims. Subsequently, victims are coerced into liking specified YouTube videos and providing screenshots as proof.

The scam's complexity unfolds as researchers are directed to download Telegram, join a channel, and engage with a designated receptionist to discuss payment. Astonishingly, after furnishing the required data, researchers received a payment of 30 RON ($6.50), affirming the scam's seemingly legitimate façade. The perpetrators then dangle the allure of additional daily tasks.

However, the insidious second phase kicks in upon the victim's entry into the Telegram channel. They are enticed to join a VIP group promising higher-earning tasks, accessible only at a considerable fee ranging from $21.66 to $1,083. Upon payment, scammers abruptly cut communication, leaving victims stranded. The scammers' Telegram channel strategically displays screenshots of payments purportedly made to victims, a calculated move to gain trust and enhance the scam's credibility.

Bitdefender Labs highlighted the prevalence of similar job listings on Facebook groups, masquerading as opportunities for remote work or lucratively paid engagements involving liking and subscribing to YouTube channels. The lure of easy money is encapsulated in scammers' claims of earning 30 RON by liking three videos, with potential daily earnings ranging from 200-2,000 RON or more.

While scams promising financial gains are not novel, Bitdefender's Cyber Threat Intelligence Lab's Manager, Nicolae Postolachi, emphasizes the uniqueness of this scam, noting that victims do, in fact, receive payment. This tactic instills trust, making users more susceptible to investing further in becoming VIP members for supposedly effortless money-making tasks.

The key takeaway from this elaborate scheme is a stark reminder that no secret tools, apps, or platforms exist for making easy money. To safeguard against scams on WhatsApp and other platforms, users are urged to exercise caution, particularly when recruiters demand high payments for seemingly simple tasks such as watching or liking YouTube videos. Be wary of requests to download external applications like Telegram or upfront payments to unlock higher-paying opportunities.

For those who unfortunately fall victim to such scams, swift action is crucial. Take screenshots, cease communication, block the user, and leave any associated groups. Strengthen account security with robust passwords and two-factor authentication. Additionally, report the scam account to the relevant social media platform, file a police report, and promptly alert friends and family to prevent further harm. Vigilance remains the cornerstone of online safety in the face of evolving digital threats.
