Microsoft's latest Windows 11 Canary build 26002 brings a welcomed boost to your device's battery life with enhanced energy-saving features. This update aims to provide users with a few extra minutes of productivity in critical low-battery situations.

In order to prioritize standby time over benchmark performance, the Windows 11 team introduces improvements to the built-in battery saver. The update, designed to extend battery life, involves a compromise by trading off some system performance. This adjustment is particularly beneficial for users facing low battery scenarios, where the priority shifts from pushing FPS to conserving energy.

One notable change in Windows 11 build 26002 is the expansion of the energy saver functionality. Previously exclusive to battery-dependent devices, energy saver is now accessible when plugged in, catering to desktop computers that do not rely on batteries. This expansion allows users to conserve energy consistently, optimizing performance even on stationary PCs. Microsoft stated:

"While optimized to extend battery life, energy saver will be available when PCs are plugged in (this includes desktop PCs) for those aiming to conserve energy all the time"

Users can activate the energy saver mode by pressing Win + A and clicking the "Energy saver" button, or by navigating to Settings > System > Power and toggling the "Always use energy saver" option. Tablet and laptop users can also set specific battery levels at which the OS automatically activates the battery saver.

Microsoft refrains from specifying the exact battery performance improvements, acknowledging that results will vary based on device configuration, workflow, environment, and other factors.

In addition to the energy-saving enhancements, Windows 11 build 26002 introduces several notable changes. A Wi-Fi refresh button is now available, addressing a long-standing user request. Quick Settings also receive performance improvements, promising a smoother user experience. The update includes fixes for known issues and various enhancements, contributing to a more refined and efficient Windows 11 experience.
