Microsoft has released the June 2024 non-security update for Windows 11, providing users with a suite of new features and enhancements. This optional update, available for all supported versions of Windows 11, introduces a variety of improvements designed to enhance user experience and functionality.
KEY FEATURES OF THE JUNE 2024 WINDOWS 11 UPDATE. Microsoft is gradually rolling out several new features to Windows 11 users who opt to test the company's non-security updates. Below are the most notable additions in this release:
- Game Pass Recommendation Card: A new Game Pass recommendation card has been added to the Settings home page. This feature is available on Home and Pro editions for users signed in with their Microsoft account. The card appears if you actively play games on your PC, providing personalized recommendations.
- Taskbar Enhancements: The show desktop button is back on the taskbar by default. Users can change this setting by right-clicking the taskbar, selecting Taskbar settings, and adjusting the Taskbar behaviors at the bottom of the page.
- 3. Expanded Archive Support in File Explorer: File Explorer now supports creating 7-Zip and Tape Archive (TAR) files via the context menu. When right-clicking a file, a new "Compress to" option offers various compression tools like gzip and bzip2. Additionally, a new compression wizard in Additional options helps users choose more formats, adjust compression levels, and manage data storage in different TAR formats.
- 4. Emoji 15.1 Support: The update adds support for Emoji 15.1, including Unicode symbol-like shapes for family groupings, horizontal and vertical head shakes, a phoenix, a lime, a brown mushroom, and a broken chain. Users can also choose the direction for some people emoji.
- 5. Enhanced File Copying: Users can now copy files directly from the Windows Share window by clicking the new Copy button, simplifying file management.
- 6. New Account Manager in Start Menu: The rollout of a new account manager on the Start menu has begun. This feature provides a glance at account benefits and simplifies the management of account settings for users signed in with a Microsoft account.
ADDITIONAL UPDATES AND FIXES IN KB5039302. Beyond the new features, KB5039302 addresses several issues affecting all Windows 11 users:
- Snipping Tool Fixes: Resolves audio distortion issues when recording videos with Snipping Tool on some PCs.
- Touch Keyboard Improvements: Fixes an issue preventing the entry of special characters using the touch keyboard with the Japanese 106 keyboard.
- USB Device Ejection: Corrects a problem where the Safely Remove Hardware option fails to eject USB devices when Task Manager is open.
HOW TO GET THE UPDATE. To download and install KB5039302, open the Settings app, navigate to "Windows Update," toggle on "Get the latest updates as soon as they are available", and check for updates. Alternatively, users can download a manual install package from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
Windows 10 users are also receiving updates with various fixes and improvements under KB5039299. Those using the previous generation of Microsoft's operating system should review the new changes.
